The Peace Officer Recertification Program enables active peace officers working in Alberta to maintain your peace officer qualifications quickly and easily by getting all your training done in one place at the same time. Tip of Spear has partnered with Control Concepts Canada to offer the most flexible and comprehensive training program in Alberta. The Peace Officer Recertification program is officially Accredited by the Training Academy - Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services.

Alberta Peace Officer Recertification Program

Peace Officers (POs) working in Alberta are responsible for assessing, monitoring, and providing a variety of services to the communities in which you serve. In your role as a Peace Officer, it is important that you maintain your competency level in the high risk/low frequency skill areas throughout your career. The Recertification Program contains all the training needed for Alberta Peace Officers to recertify in the skills related to their authorities to maintain their qualifications.  In this Recertification Program, we will review the key competencies relating to law, legislation, communication, baton, oleoresin capsicum (OC), and officer safety tactics. We will also provide you with an opportunity to apply and practice your knowledge and skills in a variety of scenarios.

 

Tip of Spear is proud to partner with Control Concepts Canada to deliver a Recertification Program, to assist Alberta Peace Officers in doing what they love: continuing to keep their communities safe as peace officers. The program has been carefully developed over the past few years and utilizes the most innovative, best practices from multiple subject matter experts in the field of use of force and law enforcement high-risk situations. This training prepares an officer to bring a new lens of diversity and inclusion to the ever-changing environments an officer experiences in their career. This program has been designed to provide you with the most up to date information and tactics to ensure your safety as you learn the techniques and skills taught during this training. 

Who must take this training?

Who is the course for and their qualifications? Any officer defined as a peace officer in Alberta that has authority by their appointment to use force. This includes Alberta Peace Officers (Correctional Services Peace Officers), Municipal Peace Officers, Military Officers, Bailiffs, Process Servers.

Why do they need to take this course? This is mandatory requirement of certification and re-certification for officers that actively employed in the province of Alberta

Program Overview

The Alberta Peace Office Recertification Program includes all educational content required to recertify all of your skills and authorities. The program contains three interconnected components: online modules, in-person skillsets and realistic scenarios. A written exam and practical exam are also included and must be passed to obtain certification.

Prerequisites:​

  • Provide proof of current appointment (photo of employment ID badge).

  • You may be required to provide a letter of employment from your employer with your authorities stated.

Certification: From Tip of Spear, Control Concepts Canada, PPCT Management Systems Inc. & Setcan Corp.

Accredited by: Training Academy - Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services

Recertification: Required every 3 years, suggested every 2 years

 

Goals:

  • Recertify in the following physical skillsets: Pressure Point Control Tactics and if deemed by your appointment: intermediate weapons (Baton and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC))

  • Refresh key theoretical competencies online regarding legislation, communication, officer safety tactics and more.

  • Apply and practice your knowledge and skills in a variety of reality-based scenarios

  • Learn the latest innovative best practices in science and application of skills at the same time with the same trainer to save time and money!

This unique blended in-person and online learning model provides a flexible, dynamic learning experience that maximizes your time and ensures your agency’s officer competencies are met as per the legislative requirements. Information will be required to be recalled and applied by combining motor-skill practice and non-motor skill material in order to demonstrate that you have met the objectives of each section. Material that you are covering here will be interweaved so that the concepts are interconnected as to avoid training silos and promote long term learning.

Program Breakdown

Online Courses

The online learning components include up to 4 courses, and takes up to 14 hours to complete. Each course also has a quiz which must be passed with at least 80%. ​The in-person written exam for the Use of Force Legislation course is written when the participant comes in to do their physical skillsets training.

Physical Skillsets

The in-person training includes up to learning 3 specific physical skillsets and takes up to 3 days. Please note that if you do not have the authorities to carry Baton and OC Spray, you will not be trained in these skills.​

The practical skills assessment is the exam in which all physical skills are tested in isolation. This includes all control tactics and handcuffing. If you need to recertify in Baton and/or OC Spray, it will include these exams as well.

Reality-Based Scenarios

​The decision-making scenarios are lifelike reality-based assessments in which all skills and knowledge will be tested in combination together. They are intended to put you in a variety of situations using the new knowledge you have learned, to help you decide what the best and safest course of action is. These are dynamic, engaging, and help prepare you for the job. A passing grade of 80% is required.​

How to take the Recertification Program

The course includes online learning modules and in-person physical skillsets plus scenario-based training to maximize your time. The online learning modules, which can be completed at your own pace and convenience, must be completed first before attending the in-person practical training.

Step 1: Complete the online learning modules

Complete the online learning modules and quizzes in order to qualify to attend the in-person training. Registration is now open! Start the program anytime. You have up to 6 months to complete the online training.

Step 2: Attend In-person Training

Once you start the online training, you will be given a link to register for the in-person training. You will be given several training dates to choose from. The training will take place over 3 days, at Tip of Spear Academy in Edmonton, Alberta. Please note that you must have your online training completed at least 14 days prior to the in-person training.

Upcoming In-Person Training Dates

Once you start your online training, you will be able to register for one of the following in-person training dates. Please note that you must have completed your online training no later than 14 days prior to your in-person training to qualify to take the training on that date.
