PROGRAM OVERVIEW

WHO IS THIS TRAINING FOR?

Eligibility: Any officer defined as a Peace Officer in Alberta that has authority by their appointment to use force, including: Alberta Peace Officers (Correctional Services Peace Officers), Municipal Peace Officers, Military Officers, Bailiffs, and Process Servers.​

Why do they need to take this course? It is a mandatory requirement to certify and re-certify for officers who are actively employed in the province of Alberta.

PREREQUISITES

  • Provide proof of current appointment (photo of employment ID badge).

  • You may be required to provide a letter of employment from your employer with your authorities stated.

  • Proof of OC certification

CERTIFICATION: From Tip of Spear, Control Concepts Canada, PPCT Management Systems Inc. 

ACCREDITED BY: Training Academy - Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services

RECERTIFICATION: Required every 3 years, suggested every 2 years

 TRAINING GOALS:

  • Recertify in key physical skillsets: Pressure Point Control Tactics, Baton, and Oleoresin Capsicum (OC).​

  • Strengthen core theoretical competencies online regarding Use of Force Legislation. 

  • Apply and refine techniques through realistic scenario-based training.

​

Learn the latest innovations in evidence-based tactical science and field application. You will receive a Use of Force Legislation certificate, a program certificate from Tip of Spear and Control Concepts Canada, and a PPCT Use of Force, Baton, and OC certificate.

REALISTIC SCENARIOS

Our Peace Office training program offers a structured yet flexible pathway designed to develop and sustain professional competency. From foundational knowledge to tactical acumen, each stage builds the confidence, capability, and credibility required for modern enforcement roles- all within Canadian context and through a lens of diversity.

PROGRAM BREAKDOWN

ONLINE COMPONENT

Use of Force Legislation- 8 hours

This online module is mandatory and must be completed before attending the in-person portion of the program. Complete the course at home or work, at your own pace! The in-person written exam for the Use of Force Legislation course is written when the participant comes in to complete their physical skillsets training.

The in-person training is completed over 2 days- Curriculum follows all accredited material required as per the Training Academy- Alberta Public Safety and Emergency Services.

Review and practice your Peace Officer Use of Force foundational skills-including all control tactics, handcuffing, and baton skillsets. Review Oleoresin Capsicum use. A practical skills assessment will be included, with all physical skillsets tested in isolation.

​Lifelike reality-based assessments designed to evaluate how officers integrate their skills and knowledge under pressure. All competencies- both theoretical and physical- are tested together in these exercises.​ A passing grade of 80% is required.

ONLINE PORTION​

​​

  • Use of Force Legislation is mandatory for recertification, and the coursework must be completed before attending the in-person portion of the training. Includes a quiz which must be passed with a grade of 80%.

  • The in-person written exam for the Use of Force Legislation course is written when the participant comes in to complete their physical skillsets training.​​​

PHYSICAL SKILLSETS​

​

  • The in-person training includes learning 3 specific physical skillsets and takes 2 days to complete. Please note that if you do not have the authorities to carry Baton and OC Spray, you will not be trained in these skills​

  • The practical skills assessment is the exam in which all physical skills are tested in isolation. This includes all control tactics and handcuffing. If you need to recertify in Baton and/or OC Spray, these components will be included as part of your evaluation.​

  • In-person training provides an opportunity to refresh tactical proficiency, reinforce safe use-of-force applications, and demonstrate readiness for field duties under realistic conditions.

REALITY BASED SCENARIOS

​

  • ​The decision-making scenarios are lifelike reality-based assessments designed to evaluate how officers integrate their skills and knowledge under pressure. All competencies- both theoretical and physical- are tested together in these exercises.​

  • These scenarios place participants in a variety of realistic situations that require applying learned techniques, sound judgement, and tactical awareness to determine the safest and most effective course of action.​

  • This capstone assessment is dynamic and engaging, helping officers to build confidence and readiness for real-world field operations. A passing grade of 80% is required.

ADDITIONAL ONLINE LEARNING OPTIONS:

Officer Safety Skills (accredited), Communication Techniques (accredited), and Power Pyramid are not required for Use of Force recertification. While these additional courses may be considered optional, we strongly encourage officers to complete them to expand their professional competencies- strengthening communication, situational awareness, and leadership skills- all valuable assets for career advancement and resume development.

An added benefit of the online modules is that participants may revisit their course content at any time, reinforcing their knowledge and supporting ongoing professional development.

 

Each course also has a quiz which must be passed with at least 80%.

HOW TO TAKE THE RECERTIFICATION PROGRAM

Purchase the Use-of-Force Recertification Package

 The package includes: Peace Officer Use of Force Legislation (Online, approximately 8 hours) and review, practice, and assessment of Control Tactics, Baton, and Oleoresin Capsicum. (In-person, 2 days). Please note that Oleoresin Capsicum recertification does not entail OC contamination, only theory components will be reviewed for recert.

 

​Complete the online learning module- Peace Officer Use of Force Legislation

Complete the online learning modules and quizzes in order to qualify to attend the in-person training. Registration is now open! Start the program anytime. You have up to 6 months to complete the online training.

Attend In-person Training

Once you start the online training, you will be given a link to register for the in-person training. You will be given several training dates to choose from. The training will take place over 2 days, at Tip of Spear Academy in Edmonton, Alberta. Please note that you must have your online training completed at least 14 days prior to the in-person training.

This unique blended in-person and online learning model provides a flexible, dynamic learning experience that maximizes your time and ensures your agency’s officer competencies are met as per the legislative requirements. Information will be required to be recalled and applied by combining motor-skill practice and non-motor skill material in order to demonstrate that you have met the objectives of each section. Our training integrates multiple concepts and skills together, promoting long-term learning and real-world adaptability through both physical and cognitive practice.
